György Lakatos was born in Kalocsa, Hungary in 1960. In 1986 he graduated from the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, Budapest as a student of László Hara, László Hara Jr., Gábor Janota and Tibor Fülemile. He has been a principal bassoonist of the orchestra of the Hungarian State Opera from 1983. Some years later he becomes also the principal bassoonist of the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra. He had been elected the „Artist of the Year“ by the Hungarian State Opera in 1987. On four occasions, between 1993 and 1997 he got the Artisjus Prize, the one founded by the Hungarian Bureau for the Protection of Author’s Rights for the best interpretation of contemporary pieces. He was awarded the Liszt Prize in 1996, and in 1997 he won the Eötvös Scholarship in Paris, than Soros Scholarship in Oberlin, (1998) and in London (2000). Ever since the beginning of his career he has been paying great attention to modern and contemporary compositions and has been dealing with them with special care. He has been the professor of the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music since 2004.
